Viman Nagar, 27th August 2024: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has unveiled an ambitious expansion project at Pune Airport, aimed at significantly elevating the passenger experience. This initiative follows the successful commissioning of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) on July 14, 2024, which currently accommodates a peak hour capacity of 3,000 passengers and features 34 check-in counters. Building on this success, AAI is set to begin the next phase of development in October 2024, focusing on the modernization and extension of the Old Terminal Building.
The upcoming expansion will see the existing arrival hall of the Old Terminal Building transformed into an extended departure hall, seamlessly connected to the NITB via a new corridor. This strategic move is designed to address the growing passenger demands and improve operational efficiency. The revamped terminal area will include 16 additional check-in counters, aimed at streamlining passenger processing and reducing wait times. Moreover, a cutting-edge security check area will be introduced, featuring advanced Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs) and X-ray machines, which will enhance security measures and expedite the screening process.
In addition to these upgrades, the project will integrate the existing airport systems with those of the NITB, ensuring a smooth and cohesive operation across all terminal facilities. The expansion will also bring in a range of new retail shops, offering passengers a broader selection of services and amenities during their journey.
The development will add 4,000 square meters to the airport’s infrastructure, representing a significant investment of Rs. 25.00 crore. The project is expected to be fully operational by March 2025, reinforcing AAI’s commitment to providing a world-class airport experience. By enhancing the terminal’s infrastructure and increasing capacity, AAI aims to reduce check-in and security screening times, making air travel at Pune Airport more efficient and enjoyable for all passengers.
