Explaining further, the weather department said that a yellow alert has been sounded for Mumbai for Sunday, September 8. The district is likely to witness moderate showers today, (September 7), after which the intensity will pick up on Sunday.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert has also been issued for Thane which will receive heavy rainfall on Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8.
However, the weather bureau has issued an orange alert in Raigad from Saturday until Monday, September 9, with the IMD forecasting ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’.
After a dry August in Mumbai, the weather bureau had indicated that the country is likely to witness above-average rain in September.
It made a comeback in Mumbai with moderate showers on Thursday, September 5. The IMD’s Santacruz observatory surpassed 2,500 mm of rain on Friday morning, September 6, since the onset of the monsoon in June.
Even as the city recorded a rain deficit in June and August, Mumbai surpassed its seasonal average rain quota on August 24, when the Santacruz station recorded over 2,361 mm.
IMD data showed that in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Friday, September 6, the Santacruz and Colaba observatory registered only 10 mm and 13 mm of rain.Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC’s) automatic weather station showed that the heaviest rainfall was observed in the western suburbs at an average of 17 mm, followed by the eastern suburbs (16.26 mm) and island city (7 mm).
The maximum temperature in Mumbai’s Santacruz observatory settled at 31.6 degrees Celsius on September 5, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 25.8 degrees Celsius. Whereas, the minimum temperature in Mumbai’s Colaba observatory was recorded at 31.2 degrees Celsius on September 5, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 26.4 degrees Celsius.
