Meet India’s Youngest Female IAS Officer: Smita Sabharwal

From Secunderabad to the Top: Smita Sabharwal’s Journey to Becoming One of India’s Youngest Female IAS Officers

Clearing the UPSC Civil Services exam is a formidable challenge, with many candidates struggling even after multiple attempts. However, Smita Sabharwal, one of India’s youngest female IAS officers, achieved this milestone at the remarkable age of 23.

Born in Darjeeling, West Bengal, into a Bengali family, Smita is the daughter of Colonel Pranab Das and Purabi Das. Her educational journey began at St. Ann’s High School in Secunderabad, Telangana. She then pursued a degree in commerce from St. Francis College for Women in Hyderabad, where she excelled academically, notably securing the top position in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) examination.

Smita Sabharwal’s UPSC success story is inspiring: she cleared the exam on her second attempt in 2000, securing an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 4. Known as the “people’s officer,” she has served in various districts across Telangana, including Warangal, Visakhapatnam, Karimnagar, and Chittoor. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the youngest officer to be posted in the Chief Minister’s Office.

Her dedication to public service is evident in her approach and career choices. Smita began preparing for the UPSC exam during her third year of graduation, dedicating the final months of her degree solely to intensive study. Her commitment paid off when she succeeded in her examination the following year.

In January 2024, Smita Sabharwal took on a new role as the member secretary of the TS Finance Corporation, continuing her impressive career in public administration. Active on social media, Smita engages with the public on platforms like Instagram and Twitter, where she shares insights into her professional journey and personal experiences.
