Bhosari, 16th September 2024: Athletics players in Pimpri Chinchwad are once again disappointed as the synthetic track at Shree Santh Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Sports Complex has been closed for maintenance. Frustration is evident as Rs 4 crore has been invested in this “state-of-the-art” facility, yet it continues to face damage. This closure is expected to last for around two months. Athletes practising in Pimpri-Chinchwad have only this complex in Indrayani Nagar, Bhosari for training.
The 400-meter, eight-lane running track at the complex was replaced a year ago by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), which spent Rs 4 crore on its construction. On 15th March 2024, the track was reopened for athletes after one year of closure. However, it was damaged within just five days of use, prompting the PCMC to shut it down for repairs amidst public backlash.
In June, the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate (PCPC) conducted physical tests for police constable candidates on the track, further damaging it. The track is now completely uprooted in some areas, with damages visible, leading to another closure for repairs. As a result, athletes are missing out on valuable practice, which has also affected their performance.
PCMC Joint City Engineer Manoj Sethia stated, “The track has been closed for repairs, which are delayed due to rain. We need 15 consecutive rain-free days to complete the work. It will take two months to finish the repairs. The contractor will handle the repairs, and their payment of Rs 50 lakh has not been cleared. The deposit amount is also with the PCMC.”
Pimpri Chinchwad Athletes Hampered by Uneven Tracks
The poor condition of the running track in Pimpri Chinchwad is severely impacting athletes’ performance. Uneven and unsafe surfaces hinder their ability to achieve optimal speed and endurance, increasing the risk of injuries such as sprains or muscle strains. These injuries lead to longer recovery times and disrupt their progress. Additionally, inconsistent track conditions affect technique, diminishing athletes’ ability to maintain form and efficiency. Poor track quality also reduces motivation, as athletes feel unsafe or unable to reach their full potential in such environments.
