Pune Bengaluru Highway: Ban On Heavy Vehicles On Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass During Peak Hours To Ease Traffic Congestion

Patil highlighted that the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass serves as a crucial link for many residents who work in IT companies at Hinjewadi IT Park. The absence of alternative routes compounds the issue. “The sections near Navale Bridge, Vadgaon Bridge, and Mutha Bridge are only two lanes wide, causing further disruption in vehicular movement,” Patil explained. The rest of the bypass is a three-lane road.

Traffic-related accidents have become a serious concern on this bypass. “In 2023 alone, 31 people lost their lives in accidents on this road. This year, 15 fatalities have already been recorded in the first seven months,” Patil noted.

Traffic Improvement Measures on 32 Major Roads Begin

Starting August 16, the city will see significant improvements at intersections on 32 major roads, along with enhanced parking management and traffic control measures. These efforts, conducted in collaboration with the City Transport Branch and Pune Municipal Corporation, aim to boost road traffic capacity and cut down on travel time.

Actions Against Traffic Rule Violators

Authorities are taking strict measures against malls, hotels, and other establishments that obstruct traffic flow. In addition, firm actions are being implemented against drivers who violate traffic regulations, according to Patil.

Pune Police and Google Partner for Enhanced Traffic Management

The Pune Police City Traffic Branch has signed a memorandum of understanding with Google to improve traffic regulation in the city. This collaboration will allow access to critical information such as the locations of manholes, potholes, encroachments, and bus, rickshaw, and luxury bus stops. Once traffic congestion points are identified, the traffic police will take prompt action to address these issues.

Initiatives to Prevent Accidents

To reduce road accidents, a comprehensive survey is being conducted to identify the root causes. The study will examine factors such as road design, poor road conditions, driver error, and delays in hospital admission. Based on the findings, necessary improvements will be implemented to prevent accidents and reduce fatalities.

To implement the proposed ban effectively, Patil suggested utilizing two large vacant plots owned by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the Katraj Ghat section. “Heavy vehicles heading towards Mumbai can be halted at these plots in the morning, while those moving towards Katraj from Dehu Road can be stopped at various points in Pimpri Chinchwad,” he proposed.

The proposal, if approved, aims to significantly alleviate traffic jams and enhance road safety by reducing the number of heavy vehicles during peak traffic hours.
