Pune, 14th August 2024: Mannat Brar, a 17-year-old junior golfer from Poona Golf Club, secured her place in the second round of the Match Play competition with a dramatic 30-foot putt on the 18th hole. Her clutch performance came after a fiercely contested 18-hole match against England’s Matilde Santilli.
Brar, who initially took control of the match with a two-up lead after the first two holes, faced significant challenges as the round progressed. The narrow fairways and irregular agricultural furrows on the course presented difficulties, complicating her game. On the third hole, Brar’s approach landed her in the thick, rough terrain reminiscent of links courses, costing her the lead by a single stroke.
Despite regaining her advantage with a solid performance on the 14th hole, where she managed to secure a par on the par-3, Brar’s lead was short-lived. Santilli equalized the match on the 15th hole, bringing the score back to all square. The competition remained tight as both players showcased their skills and resilience.
The decisive moment came on the 18th hole, where Brar sank a critical 30-foot putt to secure her victory. This crucial shot not only saved her match but also propelled her into the second round, scheduled for tomorrow.
Brar, the daughter of a serving Army officer, demonstrated remarkable composure and skill throughout the match. Her ability to handle pressure and deliver under challenging conditions underscores her potential as a rising star in junior golf.
Mannat Brar’s impressive performance has garnered attention and support from local golfing enthusiasts and her club, Poona Golf Club. As she prepares for the next round, Brar remains focused on her goal and committed to her game.
