The PMC has initiated criminal cases against 38 defaulters who have accumulated significant tax arrears. Despite previous opportunities to settle dues, these property owners have prompted the municipal authorities to escalate the matter to the legal system.
Last year, the PMC seized over 50 properties for auction, but only two were successfully sold due to high valuations and last-minute payments. The property tax department’s backlog now stands at Rs 10,000 crore, with many defaulters resorting to legal battles.
To address this, the PMC has taken a more aggressive stance by sealing and seizing properties of defaulters. “We will take stern action against those who fail to pay their taxes,” Jagtap emphasized. The ongoing auction process targets properties with clear ownership and no legal complications.
The PMC aims to streamline the recovery process and alleviate the growing tax arrears through targeted auctions. The upcoming auctions are expected to attract property investors and buyers, helping the PMC mitigate its financial shortfall and improve revenue collection.
