Pune: PCMC Introduces 15 Decomposition Centres for Eco-Friendly Ganeshotsav 2024

Pimpri Chinchwad, 7th September 2024: To ensure an environment-friendly Ganeshotsav this year, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has introduced idol decomposition centres. PCMC has established 15 large decomposition centres, each measuring 40 feet by 30 feet and 5 feet deep. PCMC Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh announced that Ganesh idols will be scientifically decomposed using a chemical process at these centres.

Commissioner Singh has urged citizens to cooperate by donating Ganesh idols at collection centres to prevent river and lake pollution. Citizens are encouraged to use eco-friendly Ganesha idols and donate them to PCMC collection centres. Ammonium bicarbonate, provided by Rashtriya Chemical & Fertilizer Limited, will be used for the scientific decomposition of idols. PCMC’s Environment Department will guide ward office authorities on the proper use of this chemical. After decomposition, the idols will be processed in artificial ponds.

The process at the decomposition centres will be coordinated with the Environment Department and Ward Offices. Strict measures will be in place to ensure that idols are not immersed in natural water sources. Awareness campaigns are underway, and necessary facilities, including water supply, electricity, and health services, will be provided at artificial visarjan ghats. Waste collected at these sites will be processed at the Solid Waste Management Center in Moshi to produce compost. The sludge generated from idol decomposition will be sent to the C & D Waste Management Plant in Moshi to create regenerated material.

Additional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Khorate has emphasized that vigilance will be maintained to prevent noise and air pollution during Ganeshotsav, with assistance from the Pimpri Chinchwad Police as needed.
