Pune: PMC Partners with Private Firms to Address Pothole Crisis Amid Hot Mix Shortage

Pune, 31st August 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has partnered with two private companies to produce hot mix asphalt, addressing a critical shortage that has hindered efforts to repair the city’s pothole-ridden roads. The shortage arose after the PMC’s sole hot mix plant failed to meet the high demand required for extensive road repairs.

The persistent issue of potholes has led to mounting public dissatisfaction, with citizens expressing frustration over the deteriorating condition of roads across Pune. The situation worsened as heavy rains further damaged the already vulnerable road surfaces, increasing the demand for hot mix—a crucial material for filling potholes.

PMC officials acknowledged that the limited production capacity of their existing hot mix plant in Yerawada was a significant barrier to timely road repairs. The aging plant had also experienced technical issues, leading to further delays. Additionally, transporting the hot mix from Yerawada to various parts of the city resulted in a decline in material quality, complicating repair efforts.

“The administration has set a deadline to complete all road repair works before the Ganesh festival. To achieve this, we are conducting a special drive to fill potholes and have collaborated with private companies to supply the necessary hot mix materials,” said Aniruddha Pawaskar, Head of PMC’s Road Department.

Officials noted that the demand for hot mix has surged in recent years due to the expanding road network in Pune. The merger of 34 surrounding villages into the city limits has further increased the need for tar and asphalt for road repairs. “Given the increased demand and the current condition of our plant, relying on a single facility is no longer feasible,” added a senior PMC official.

The PMC’s collaboration with private firms is expected to alleviate the hot mix shortage and expedite road repairs, bringing much-needed relief to Pune’s residents.
