Pune Police Intensify Efforts Against Thefts During Ganeshotsav with New Detention Centre

Pune, 10th September 2024: Pune Police are taking action against those who steal mobile phones, jewellery, cash, and other belongings during Ganeshotsav. After detaining these individuals, they are being sent to a detention centre established at Lashkar Police Station. This is the first time such an independent system has been introduced.

During Ganeshotsav, minor crimes such as thefts of jewellery and mobile phones occur frequently. Thieves arrested by the Faraskhana-Vishrambaug Police Station are often kept in custody there, but the number of detainees often exceeds the facility’s capacity. As a result, it has been decided to house the detainees at the Lashkar Police Station.

Gangs of thieves from other states also target Pune City during the festival, often staying in lodges in the central region. To address this, crime branch teams and local police stations have been instructed to check every lodge and hotel in the area. The police are closely monitoring known thieves and have compiled a list of suspects. Preventive actions are being taken against these individuals. Additionally, 5,500 policemen have been deployed across the city to ensure a peaceful celebration.

Street gangs that harass women and girls are being arrested. Complaints of teasing are met with immediate action, with the police arresting offenders and displaying their photos in busy areas.

Women’s safety is a top priority. A significant security force has been deployed in central areas to prevent thefts of jewellery and mobile phones. Women police squads and Damini squads are patrolling the crowds, and plainclothes police teams are also active. Police help centres have been established at major intersections to assist devotees, operating round the clock during the festival. Towers have been erected to monitor the crowd.
