Pune, 29th August 2024: The recent Dahi Handi event in Pune has ignited a political controversy following the emergence of a video showing Gajanan Marne, a known criminal, warmly welcoming Minister Chandrakant Patil with a bouquet. The video, which has rapidly gone viral, has prompted widespread criticism and accusations from opposition parties that the ruling BJP is extending political patronage to criminals.
In the video, Marne, who is notorious for his criminal activities in Pune’s Kothrud area, presents a bouquet to Minister Patil. Patil accepts the bouquet and responds with a traditional greeting. This interaction has drawn particular scrutiny as Patil represents the Kothrud assembly constituency, the same area where Marne is known to operate.
Critics have expressed concerns about the implications of this public interaction. Opposition leaders have condemned the BJP, alleging that the Mahayuti alliance is willing to associate with criminal elements in its bid for re-election. They argue that this incident reflects a troubling trend of political leaders prioritizing support from criminals over their responsibility to safeguard the public.
Opposition leader Vijay Wattediwar commented on X: “This is a clear example of how the ruling party is compromising its principles for electoral gain. It is the responsibility of our elected representatives to protect the interests of the people, not to engage with individuals who have a history of criminal activities.”
As the debate continues, residents of Pune, especially in the Kothrud area, are questioning the priorities of their political representatives. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the intersection of politics and crime, a topic that remains highly relevant in the region.
Supporters of Chandrakant Patil have defended him, stating: “Dada has a clean image, and everyone knows he does not associate with individuals with a criminal background. During the Dahi Handi event, it is common for attendees to meet the guests.”
