Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old employee at EY, reportedly died due to extreme work pressure. Her death, which occurred in July 2024, has gained attention on social media, spotlighting issues of work-related stress. EY expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened by Anna Sebastian’s tragic and untimely passing. We remain committed to improving workplace conditions across our offices.”

Perayil, who had passed her CA exams in 2023, had worked at the EY Pune office for only four months before her death.

Her mother wrote a poignant letter to the EY Chairman, alleging that her daughter’s demanding work schedule contributed to her death. She criticized the intense workload and lack of breaks, including working on Sundays, highlighting the challenges faced by a newcomer. “Burdening newcomers with such excessive work, without adequate support, is unjustifiable,” her mother wrote.

The letter also praised Perayil’s achievements, noting her excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. “Anna was a fighter, from childhood through her academic years, and she gave her all at EY,” her mother added.

The case has raised significant concerns about employee welfare and the pressures placed on young professionals in the workplace. The incident has sparked discussions on mental health awareness and the need for more robust measures to ensure the safety and well-being of workers in high-pressure environments. As the investigation unfolds, there is a growing call for accountability and necessary reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
