Solapur, 25th September 2024: Solapur, renowned for its textile industry and agricultural produce, is poised for a significant boost with the recent development of its airport. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has upgraded the existing Solapur Airfield at a cost of Rs. 64.95 crores, transforming it into a facility capable of handling Q-400 and BCH-1900D aircraft under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). This expansion is expected to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The Solapur Airport, spread across 365.85 acres, has undergone major improvements, including a revamped terminal building, expanded apron for aircraft parking, and new fire and ATC facilities. The terminal, now covering 1152 square meters, can accommodate up to 150 passengers during peak hours and 4.1 lakh passengers annually. Modern amenities, such as two check-in counters, a baggage conveyor belt, and space for concessions, have been added to improve the passenger experience. The airport also offers parking for 100 cars on the city side.
In terms of airside augmentations, the apron has been expanded to accommodate four aircraft parking stands for Q-400 and BCH-1900D types of aircraft. A new fire station has been constructed to meet operational requirements, ensuring the safety of the airport.
The design of the terminal reflects Solapur’s rich cultural heritage. The artworks displayed inside the building celebrate the city’s traditions, with depictions of Lavani dance, traditional musical instruments, and the famous ‘Pandharpur Wari’ pilgrimage, offering passengers a glimpse of the region’s artistic and cultural vibrancy.
The airport also embodies AAI’s commitment to sustainability, with 100% LED lighting and energy-efficient equipment implemented throughout the facility. This focus on sustainability ensures that the airport is not only modern and functional but also eco-friendly.
The upgraded Solapur Airport is expected to bring substantial benefits to the region. Enhanced connectivity will make the city more accessible to tourists, business travelers, and investors, which, in turn, will stimulate economic growth. The airport is set to attract new businesses, boost tourism, and facilitate trade, creating direct and indirect job opportunities in sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and retail.
For residents, the airport will provide improved access to healthcare, education, and a wider range of goods and services, contributing to a better quality of life. Additionally, the infrastructure boost will likely encourage further development and investment in Solapur, positioning it as a key hub in Maharashtra’s economic landscape.
With these developments, Solapur is set to become a more connected and economically vibrant region, poised for long-term growth.
