In the same message, Sanyal assured that his responsibilities at the Economic Advisory Council would remain unaffected by his new position. He explained that the role of a university chancellor is more akin to that of a “non-executive chairman,” with duties centered on providing broad guidance and governance rather than handling the institution’s day-to-day operations. This allows him to continue his full-time role as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.

Sanyal’s extensive career includes representing India in global forums such as the G7 and OECD. He was also Co-Chair of the G20’s Framework Working Group and played a key role in developing the G20’s Global Action Plan during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep the global economy running smoothly.

Dr. Debroy, who had been appointed GIPE Chancellor just a few months ago in July, tendered his resignation to the trustees of The Servants of India Society (SIS) at the end of September. His decision to step down was reportedly linked to his desire to distance himself from the ongoing legal dispute involving former GIPE Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ajit Ranade. Ranade’s termination is currently under review by the Bombay High Court.

GIPE officials have acknowledged Debroy’s contributions during his brief tenure and welcomed Sanyal as they look forward to continuing the institute’s legacy under new leadership.
