The scheme provides 5 lakh rupees of free health insurance per family annually, ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage for senior citizens. Existing beneficiaries will receive an additional 5 lakh rupees per year, while new families will now be eligible for comprehensive coverage. Senior citizens already availing of other public health insurance schemes, such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), may choose between their existing cover or opt for AB PM-JAY.
Prime Minister Modi announced the expansion of AB PM-JAY in April 2024, aiming to strengthen India’s healthcare infrastructure. The scheme currently covers 55 crore individuals, with 7.37 crore hospital admissions recorded to date.
