Cabinet Approves Free Health Coverage For Senior Citizens Aged 70+ Under Ayushman Bharat

Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved free health coverage for all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income, under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This significant expansion of the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance program will benefit approximately 4.5 crore families.

The scheme provides 5 lakh rupees of free health insurance per family annually, ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage for senior citizens. Existing beneficiaries will receive an additional 5 lakh rupees per year, while new families will now be eligible for comprehensive coverage. Senior citizens already availing of other public health insurance schemes, such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), may choose between their existing cover or opt for AB PM-JAY.

Prime Minister Modi announced the expansion of AB PM-JAY in April 2024, aiming to strengthen India’s healthcare infrastructure. The scheme currently covers 55 crore individuals, with 7.37 crore hospital admissions recorded to date. This move is expected to provide financial protection to vulnerable senior citizens, enhance access to quality healthcare, reduce out-of-pocket expenses for families, and promote healthy aging and well-being.

NATHEALTH President Abhay Soi welcomed the decision, stating, “This initiative brings much-needed relief to millions of families and cements India’s leadership in inclusive healthcare.” Soi added, “We are witnessing a historic shift in how the country approaches elder care.”

The expansion of AB PM-JAY marks a significant step towards universal health coverage, ensuring dignity and well-being for India’s elderly population. With this decision, the government reaffirms its commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare to all citizens, regardless of age or income.

The benefits of this scheme will be far-reaching, impacting the lives of millions of senior citizens and their families. As India continues to prioritize healthcare, this initiative sets a precedent for inclusive and accessible healthcare policies.

The implementation of this scheme is expected to begin soon, bringing relief to senior citizens and their families across the country.
