A 30-year-old factory worker’s death sparks outrage over denied sick leave in Thailand.

In a tragic incident in Thailand, a 30-year-old factory worker named May died after her request for sick leave was denied by her supervisor. The incident occurred at an electronics manufacturing plant owned by Delta Electronics Thailand, located in Samut Prakan province, south of Bangkok. May had been receiving treatment for an inflamed large intestine and had previously taken medical leave from September 5-9, during which she was hospitalized for four days. She was then advised to take two additional recovery days at home.

On September 12, May requested further sick leave due to her deteriorating health, but her manager denied the request, instructing her to return to work. Despite her worsening condition, May reported to the factory but collapsed on the factory floor just 20 minutes into her shift. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent emergency surgery but tragically died from complications related to necrotizing enterocolitis.

Delta Electronics Thailand expressed deep regret over the incident, with CEO Victor Cheng issuing a statement: “At Delta Electronics, our people are the foundation of our success, and we are devastated by this loss. Our priority is to provide unwavering support to the employee’s family at this trying time. Delta Electronics remains committed to transparency and responsibility and will keep all relevant parties informed as more information becomes available.”

The incident has raised questions about workplace safety and the treatment of employees, highlighting the critical need for compassionate management practices, especially when it comes to employee health and well-being.
