First trial landing at Navi Mumbai International Airport on Oct 5

This airport is expected to significantly alter the demand-supply dynamics by enhancing passenger handling capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by 40 percent. The project was initially proposed in 1999, with construction officially starting in 2017.

Sanjay Shirsat, the newly appointed chairman of the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), visited the airport site on Tuesday, accompanied by officials from the Adani group, who are managing the construction through Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd.

In August, the Airport Authority of India successfully completed the testing of the Instrument Landing System (ILS), which is crucial for establishing the flight path and ensuring the airport’s readiness for operations.

Spanning an impressive 1,160 acres, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is estimated to cost around Rs 16,700 crore. It will include two runways, strategically positioned 1.55 kilometers apart.

After assessing the construction progress on the first of the two runways, Shirsat indicated that the state government intends to commence domestic flights at the airport by March 2025.

The Prime Minister’s attendance is expected to reinforce the MahaYuti government’s dedication to advancing numerous infrastructure initiatives in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

“After the launch of operations in March for domestic flights, the Adani Group and CIDCO Board will together plan the launch of international flights from June for the same runway. The commencement of the airport’s operations will contribute in a big way to the development of the MMR and the state in general. The NMIA has the capacity to park 350 aircraft at a time. Also, this airport has four different terminals and since they are interconnected the passengers will have the option of an internal travel route to go from one terminal to another,” says CIDCO Chairman.
