Maharashtra Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Predicted; Red Alert Issued for Pune and Satara

Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg on High Alert

In addition to Pune and Satara, heavy rainfall is expected across most areas of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The IMD has also issued a red alert for these Konkan districts, warning residents to be prepared for extreme weather conditions.

Orange Alert for Central Maharashtra and Vidarbha

An orange alert has been issued for regions including Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Akola, and Amravati, where the IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall. Similar alerts have been raised in Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, and Kolhapur. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for parts of Vidarbha, including Akola, Buldhana, Gadchiroli, Nagpur, and Wardha.

Water Release Increased from Major Dams

In response to the heavy rainfall, water release has been increased from several key dams. Ujani Dam, which had reached 106.25% of its capacity by 2 PM on August 24, has started releasing water into the Bhima River to manage flood risk. The discharge has been increased from 2,000 to 3,000 cusecs, with adjustments likely depending on the incoming water flow.

Similarly, Varasgaon Dam has increased its release to 9,025 cusecs, while Panshet Dam is now releasing 8,920 cusecs. These measures are part of the flood management strategy to prevent any overflow from the dams, which are receiving significant inflows due to the ongoing heavy rains.

Impact on Mumbai and Surrounding Areas

Mumbai, Palghar, and Thane are also expected to experience heavy rainfall, with the intensity likely to increase throughout the day. The IMD has issued an orange alert for these areas as well, advising residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel.

Residents across these regions are urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions as the situation develops.
