Pune Court to Hear Rahul Gandhi’s Defence in Savarkar Defamation Case on October 4th

Pune, 20th August 2024: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to attend Pune District Court in Shivajinagar on 4th October to present his side in a defamation suit filed against him for alleged disrespect towards Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. Rahul Gandhi was summoned to the Pune Court yesterday by First Class Magistrate Akshi Jain, and a hearing took place. The next hearing is scheduled for 4th October.

The case, presided over by First Class Judicial Magistrate Jain, involves accusations against Rahul Gandhi for making derogatory remarks about Veer Savarkar during a meeting with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in London. Savarkar’s grandson, Satyaki Savarkar, had filed a criminal defamation suit in this regard. Magistrate Jain ordered a thorough investigation and requested a report be submitted to the court. The Vishrambaug Police were instructed to file this report, but due to delays, the court issued a notice. The police report confirmed the validity of Satyaki Savarkar’s complaint, prompting the court to order Gandhi’s appearance yesterday. Although the case was not heard yesterday, the next hearing will be held on 4th October, during which Rahul Gandhi is expected to present his statement to the court.
