Pune, 9th September 2024: A drunk tempo driver crashed into multiple vehicles, leading to the death of Geetanjali Srikanth Amarale (35), a resident of Shastrinagar. The incident occurred on Sunday night around 9:30 p.m. between Karishma Chowk and Paud Phata.
The tempo driver, identified as Ashish Anant Pawar (26), a resident of Ganpati Matha, Warje, has been arrested by the police. Pawar, under the influence of alcohol, reportedly hit 5 to 6 vehicles in a reckless driving spree.
According to police, the tempo was speeding from Karishma Chowk towards Paud Phata on Karve Road. It first collided with a vehicle near Karishma Chowk, narrowly missing a crowd gathered for the Aarti at the Bal Tarun Mandal. The driver then continued his rampage, hitting a rickshaw, a Hyundai i10, and two to three two-wheelers, injuring several people.
At the same time, Shrikanth Amarale and his wife Geetanjali were turning from Paud Road onto Karve Road at Paud Phata Chowk. The tempo struck their vehicle with great force, severely injuring Geetanjali. Local residents and workers from the Erandwana Mitra Mandal and Bal Tarun Mandal rushed to the spot and immediately took the injured to the hospital. However, Geetanjali Amarale succumbed to her injuries before receiving treatment.
Shrikanth Amarale, an activist with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and an office bearer of the Sangam Mitra Mandal in Shastrinagar, was reportedly out with his wife to collect materials for Gauri celebrations after the Mandal Aarti when the accident occurred.
Advocate Kishore Shinde confirmed Geetanjali Amarale’s death. The Alankar police have taken over the investigation and are probing the case further.
