The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) explains that the definition of workplace violence includes “violent actions intended at individuals at work or on duty.” These acts of violence include threats and attacks of a physical kind.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has developed a variety of measures to assist businesses in reducing the likelihood of potentially hazardous circumstances on the job in response to the growing number of people killed or injured due to workplace violence.

Policies and Reprisal

It is recommended that employers put policies that clearly say that violence will not be allowed in the workplace. There should be written notification of these guidelines for your employees and consumers. If a victim of workplace violence comes forward to report the incident, you must do all in your power to prevent the abuser from retaliating against her.
