You’re trying to convince the reader that something is true. You’re saying, “Hey, you know, here’s why it’s true.”

 A good essay starts with a strong claim. Maybe your argument is simply that something exists, that something is possible, or that something happened. 

Maybe you argue that something is important. Maybe this is a judgment, and maybe it’s a fact. Whatever it is, make it clear. Then, back that claim up. 

Give the reader some reason to believe it. This might be a personal experience, or a statistic, or a quote from someone else. Put together, these bits of evidence convince your reader that your claim is true. 

Then, back up that claim again. Give the reader more evidence. Give the reader reason to think you’re qualified to make that judgment. Then, back up that claim again and again. 

Each piece of evidence should strengthen the claim, and by doing it, you make it stronger. It’s helpful to think of your reader as weighing the evidence, and the claim is the evidence. 

The claim is what the essay is about, not something else. You might start an essay about the joys of parenthood with, “People say children bring joy to their parents’ lives, but I disagree.” That’s not a claim.

What are the five basic steps to writing an essay? Avoid clichés

Clichés are traps. An essay can have the best content in the world, but the writing will lack the elegance and structure of a great essay. 

Most people can spot clichés, and clichés are an easy way to get your essay rejected. 

They’re also dull to read, and dull writing is a problem in admissions. A cliché is anything you’ve heard before but haven’t said yourself. 

A cliché is an expression that is over-used and overused in an obvious way. 

Clichés tend to be vague, or abstract, or empty. They also tend to hide their real meaning. 

For example, “Every child should be loved” is a cliché. Why? Because it’s true. So, all children are loved, and that’s true. But why is it true? Is it because every person is a person? Then why are some people loved more than others? Is it because all people, especially children, are precious? 

Then why are some people more precious than others? Is it because God loves all people? Then why are some people loved by God more than others? Is it because we all deserve love? Then why are some people more deserving of love than others? Is it because God’s love is universal? Then why are some of God’s loves universal? The cliché is vague, abstract, empty, and so misleading. It does not say what it means.

Give good examples to support your ideas.

The main advantage of showing a personal example is that it makes you sound more human. But it has a downside. If you write about something unrelated to you, you will likely have to find other examples. 

And learning to use examples effectively takes time and practice. So it’s reasonable to ask: are personal examples really necessary? Suppose you think that smart people are good at managing their money. 

Then, if you want to sound as smart as possible, just make a list of smart people who have done well at managing their money. This will probably give you better examples than trying to write an essay about managing yourself. 

But having said all that, the personal examples can be useful. They show the reader that you understand the specific question. And if you use examples from your own experience, they have an added advantage: they show that you know how to relate ideas to your own life. 

This doesn’t mean you can use anecdotes only from people who have done something interesting. You have to think before using them.

One mistake that is common in the majority of the student while writing essays is to ramble. They start with the point, and conclude, and then make the point again. 

In academic writing, this is not the way to do it. The point of the essay is to explain. Each point should stand on its own. This is why academic writing uses paragraphs, not sentences.

A biography is a good illustration of how sticking to a clear essay plan helps. 

The person writing the biography has to decide which events to include and which to leave out. 

What to include depends partly on how much readers already know of that person. But there’s also a practical matter: the biography has to be long enough. 

And how much is long enough? It depends on how much the biographer wants to tell. If readers know very little of that person, they can read a short biography. 

But if they know a lot, a short biography will be hard to finish because the subject’s whole life is crammed into it. So biographers have to make choices. 

If they know the subject well, they can include a lot more. But if they don’t know much about the subject, a short biography seems safest. That in itself is a choice. 

Biographers who don’t know the subject well have to make a judgment. Do they know enough to make a judgment, or do they know enough to ask someone who knows the subject to tell them? It might help to know that the biographer, like most biographers, has a bias. 

The biographer usually writes the biography, and they don’t want to tell the readers anything that is not flattering. So they omit mistakes, even though those mistakes provide useful evidence. 

This is not to say biography is not a good genre. (“Good genre” is a euphemism for “easy to write.”) Biographers like writing biographies, even if they don’t like reading them.


The conclusion to an essay is the last sentence in your essay – the last paragraph. 

It is here that you summarize what you’ve said in the rest of the essay and tie your argument or argument together. Two useful phrases to beware of in conclusion are “assum[ing]” and “suppose.” Assump­tions are unsupported claims in conclusion. 

Supposes, on the other hand, are reasonable assumptions that you make in an essay. 

Suppose, for example, that you plan to write an exposition on how to write a good essay. You write, “I assume readers will finish the essay with a better understanding of how to write a good essay.” 

These are reasonable assumptions, but in conclusion to an essay, they are unnecessary. Readers will finish the essay (hopefully) with a better understanding of how to write a good essay.
